To get a general idea of compliance requirements for different areas of research, here is a Regulatory Overview for Researchers.

This UConn Health Center Biosafety website makes requirements conveniently available and provides information and resources to help Health Center community members perform their work in safe and healthy ways that promote productive, legal science with as little/few fuss, fines or imprisonment (FFI) as possible on anyone’s part.

The UConn Health Center Biosafety Program has safety and regulatory requirements involving the following situations:

• Work with infectious organisms or viruses, including those listed as “Select Agents” (PDF) that have potential as bioweapons.
• Work with biological toxins, including those that are listed as “Select Agents."
• Work with exempt or non-exempt recombinant DNA.
• Work with human or non-human primate blood, fluids, tissues or cell strain/line cultures. Note: Contact the ESCRO and the Biosafety Officer about work with any human embryonic stem cells.
• Work with humans or the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Note: contact the Biosafety Officer about Human Gene Transfer studies or biological Risk Assessment Reports.
• Work with animals or the Animal Care Committee (IACUC). Note: contact the Bisosafety Officer about occupational (human) hazards in Animal Care Protocols and developing safety protocols (forms) for these.
• Shipping, receiving, importing or exporting biological materials.
