3.2.1.A Read Me First Training Folder
1. For Labs that use infectious substances, and therefore require State Department of Public Health Registration, the State is also requiring that PIs give staff researchers Biosafety Training. A list of Biosafety Training topics may be found on the next-to-last page of the State Lab Checklist (3.5.3).

2. Biosafety Training can be done by viewing / reading items in this Training Folder (3.2). Training sessions should occur annually. The recommended first training session should include:

In subsequent annual sessions, one or two other items out of the training folder should be viewed / read. For instance, in year two, The Nuaire BSC Training Course (3.2.3.A.3) and movies (3.2.3.A.1, folder) could be viewed. In year three, Centrifuge Aerosol Biosafety (3.2.3.B, folder) could be read. In year 4, etc. [To find these topics, click the 'Information & Resources' button on the left > click the 'Information & Resources Outline' link at the top > Expand Outline Heading '3.0' > Expand Outline Heading '3.2' > etc.] Each participant should pick or be assigned topics that would be most useful to them. The purpose of doing annual training of different topics is to remind people at least annually that they need to work safely, and to broaden their biosafety knowledge in areas that apply most to them.

3. The State is requiring that this training must be documented. 3.2.2.B is a form for documenting training. The most efficient way to do this is to have a sheet for each topic, where that topic is checked off or written in at the top. Then each time a new person trains on that topic they should sign and date the sheet. The PI should sign at the bottom for the first staff signature and update the sheet by initialing new entries.

4. Please keep the training documentation on record where it may be found during State or other inspections. Keeping it in a lab binder with other lab safety information, is recommended.
