What's New

  • New "Reminder of NIH Policy for Enhancing the Science, Safety, and Ethics of Recombinant DNA Research": http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-096.html

  • The New 5th Edition of Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL5) is on the web: http://www.cdc.gov/od/ohs/biosfty/bmbl5/bmbl5toc.htm         20070215

  • There are new forms (version 1.4) for transgenic and gene targeted mice constructed in the GTTF. They are in the IBC section (click IBC button on left). Contact the IBC Coordinator (IBCC) if you have questions. 20061213

  • 2007  IBC meetings are from 1:30 ~ 4pm 1/8, 3/12, 5/21, 7/9, 9/10, 11/19.

  • There's a new regulatory overview chart at the top of the biosafety home page. This is regulatory/compliance stuff you need to do for various kinds of research. 20061127

  • There's also a sheet to orient you about use of rDNA and hazards in animal work. It talks about when you need an ACC Safety Protocol and when you need an IBC registration and what the difference is. It normally resides on the biosafety home page at the sixth bullet point - "work with animals". 20061127

  • The WHO Biosecurity Guidance and a request for commentary by 12/22/2006 are available. 20061019

  • The NIH Office of Biotechnology Activities (NIH OBA) is performing inspections of institutions that are using rDNA. They are circulating a flyer about this. 20061019

  • The NIH OBA is circulating a document about Lentiviral Vector Safety. 20061019

  • This website as of 8/25/2006.

  • The first meeting of the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) was held June 30 and July 1, 2005. All of the proceedings were webcast and archives are available at this site. There is an informative FAQ. The charge of the board is to define what is responsible with regard to scientific discoveries that may be used for good or ill - also called "dual use" technologies.

  • At the end of 2004 Dr. Amy Patterson, the Director of the NIH Office of Biotechnology Activities (OBA) addressed all Institutions with this reminder about compliance to the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules. Contact your local Biological Safety Officer (BSO) if you have questions about what you are doing in relation to the NIH rDNA Guidelines.
